I believe it is the teacher’s responsibility to provide a safe environment, where students can learn without fear of criticism or failure. A positive classroom environment encourages students to push themselves and to ask questions leading to personal discovery. An art educator should foster an atmosphere that supports investigation and experimentation, where research and critical thinking provide a foundation for the work created. Students should develop their artist statements and complete written reflections, which will center their growth on personal insight and self-discovery. Observing other artists and their processes is another vital step in students finding their artistic voice.
My advanced level students do enjoy working with Art Synectic triggers to promote creativity and content in their artwork, but learning isn't confined to the classroom. I believe teachers should provide opportunities for students to work in unique ways that will best showcase their work. For example, I’ve arranged for some of my students’ work to be shown in community buildings and offices. At times, I’ve brought in professional artists for workshops and welcomed community members into the classroom as “clients” for custom works. One example would be the digital animations and graphic designs my students created for Memorial Methodist’s training materials.
A great teacher leads not just from a lectern but also through action, spending hands-on time helping their students discover their own questions and answers. Great teachers don’t just teach content — they walk alongside their students, learning and growing together, making lifelong connections along the way. Additionally, when a student sees their teacher creating and active in their field outside the classroom, it validates every lesson taught inside the classroom. A great teacher is committed to lifelong learning, loves their content area, and is an effective communicator. All three of these make for a happy and enriched teacher, and in return, a happy and enriched classroom.
